About The Modern Dane
A Return to Scandinavian Values
The Modern Dane was born from a desire to bring Scandinavian values of simplicity, sustainability, and great design into the everyday. Founder Jacob Andsager grew up in the small town of Broager, Denmark, surrounded by nature and a culture that valued craftsmanship, good design, and how well-made objects can quietly elevate everyday life. After two decades in the U.S., he felt a growing longing to reconnect with those roots—not just personally, but through his work.
He began asking himself how he could bring a piece of that Scandinavian ethos to his life in America. The answer came in the form of one of the most intimate and overlooked parts of our daily lives: bedding. Jacob saw an opportunity to reimagine something ordinary as something meaningful—a way to bring beauty, comfort, and nature into the home. Bedding could be more than just functional; it could reflect values of intentional living, sustainability, and timeless design.
Rethinking Everyday Essentials
As he began exploring textiles however, Jacob was struck by the environmental impact of conventional cotton. Often called "the world’s dirtiest crop," cotton relies heavily on toxic pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, and intensive irrigation. Though grown on just 2.5% of global farmland, it accounts for 16% of all insecticide use. Cotton farming also drains water resources and is frequently associated with exploitative labor practices.
Determined to find a better alternative, Jacob ultimately discovered certified organic European flax linen—a fabric that aligned with both his values and aesthetic vision. Flax requires no irrigation or synthetic chemicals and is mechanically processed without harsh treatments. It’s naturally biodegradable and even acts as a carbon sink while it grows.
For Jacob, the choice was clear. Here was a fabric that was beautiful, sustainable, and deeply connected to the European traditions he cherished.
Crafting a Better Way
In 2018, he traveled to Guimarães, Portugal—home to some of Europe’s finest textile artisans—to bring his vision to life. There, he partnered with a manufacturer who shared his commitment to quality and sustainability. Together, they began crafting timeless, nature-inspired duvet covers to the highest environmental standards. Every piece is made using only GOTS, OEKO-TEX®, and European Flax® certified materials, ensuring a safe and eco-conscious product from start to finish.
As a direct-to-consumer brand, The Modern Dane eliminates retail markups, invests in sustainable packaging, and builds lasting relationships with its customers. Each design is a tribute to Scandinavian landscapes—and an invitation to live more beautifully, naturally, and intentionally.
A Word from Our Founder
"Growing up in Denmark, I developed a deep appreciation for design—not just how things look, but how they shape the way we live. After seventeen years in the U.S., I felt a strong pull to reconnect with those roots and share that passion with my American family and friends.
I started The Modern Dane to create products that bring lasting joy to people’s homes—pieces made to endure, to be cherished, and even passed down. At its heart, this brand is about my belief in durability, sustainability, and the idea that good design should enrich our lives.
My hope is that your Modern Dane product outlasts the next ten you would’ve bought—and that when its time finally comes, it can be gracefully returned to the earth. I truly believe we’ve reached a turning point: the era of disposable goods is behind us. It’s time to return to craftsmanship, to honoring our materials, and to creating things worth keeping.
This is the journey we’re on. I hope you’ll join us in building a future where we all live a little more beautifully."
